General Summary
Under direct supervision, provides care to patients with partial or total loss of limb by fitting and making artificial limbs known as prostheses, under the direction of and in consultation with a physician.

Principal Responsibilities
   » Responsible for providing care to patients with disabling conditions of the limbs and spine through the following:
   »
   » Examines and evaluates patients' prosthetic needs.
   » Demonstrates competency in knowledge the growth and development of infant, child, adolescent and geriatric patients as measured by specific performance standards and as described by department/unit policies and procedures. Demonstrates the capability to interpret growth and development related information to ensure patient needs are met.
   » Measures and makes any needed casts.
   » Designs the prosthesis and prepares the layout of the prosthesis design.
   » Fits the patient for the prosthesis and makes necessary alterations.
   » Selects necessary materials for the prosthesis.
   » Instructs patients in the use and care of the prosthesis.
2. Evaluates patient progress and maintains patient records.
3. Responsible for keeping current and updated regarding new technology in the field of prosthetics.
4. Monitors the work of technicians and residents in relation to the development of prostheses.
5. prosperously completes required environment of care training and Cerner training. Uses Cerner to execute job tasks as needed.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
   » Presents two case presentations in the course of his/her one year cycle.
   » Participate in the review of two peer journal articles.
   » Responsible for completion of a ?Resident Directed Study? to be approved by preceptor and the National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education (NCOPE).
   » Responsible for maintaining a log of anonymous patient statistics for completion of quarterly and year-end NCOPE Residency Performance evaluation.
Reporting Relationships
   » Reports to Director, P & O Education.
   » Direct supervision by Certified Prosthetist during focused rotation.


Job Requirements


   » Minimum of a Bachelor's degree or Certificate in Prosthetics from Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited college or university is required.
   » Analytical capability is required to gather information from patient evaluations and recommend solutions to technical and administrative problems.
   » Interpersonal expertise necessary to communicate with patients and staff regarding fabrication of equipment.
   » capability to move casts.
Working Conditions
   » Normal patient care environment with exposure to dust, loud noises, offensive odors, and fumes.
   » Some exposure to infectious diseases when working with patients.
   » May include exposure to community, home, work, school and off-site clinic settings.
