Job Requirements

Blue Shield of California seeks a seasoned senior communicationsprofessional to lead the organization's corporate reputation and thoughtleadership abilities practice. This newposition will design and execute strategies to enhance the Blue Shield ofCalifornia reputation with external constituents. located in San Francisco, CA,the Director, Corporate Reputation and Thought leadership abilities will lead a team of 3-5professionals and will report to the Senior Vice President of External Affairs,who reports directly to the CEO. S/he will work as part of the leadership abilities team tocreate and execute cutting-edge communication and engagement strategies thatsignificantly and measurably improve external perception of BSC among keyconstituents, helping to position the company as a leader on health reform,achieve business goals and advance the organization's mission to makehealthcare accessible and affordable to all Californians.

The Director, Corporate Reputation and Thought leadership abilities willplay a major function in developing content, campaigns and executive visibilityopportunities that position the company at the regional, state and nationallevel as a credible health care leader with key external constituents. Theywill manage relationships with external stakeholders to position Blue Shield ofCalifornia as a health reform leader and partner closely with Government Relationsto create the right conditions to achieve our mission. This leader will alsobuild a high performing team that is recognized as proactive communicationpartners to business leaders. S/he willpartner closely with other members of the External Affairs leadership abilities team aswell as peers in Internal Communications and Marketing to align reputation andbrand efforts.


•Bachelors degree and minimum of ten years practice in progressivelymore responsible functions in corporate communications, with a considerable portionof that directly engaged in the development of strategic communicationsinvolving strong reputation positioning and a substantial impact on publicpolicy.

•At least five years of managery practice of a team no less thanthree professional FTEs, with proven success at not only leading executionprosperously, but mentoring communications professionals, as well.
   » Demonstratedcapability to develop and executive strategic message platforms that engagestakeholders and inspire action.
•An knowledge of the public policy and regulatory environmentgoverning managed-care companies both nationally and in California is stronglypreferred.

•practice in providing effective advice, counsel and coaching oncommunications issues to executives, managers and colleagues

•Exceptional written and verbal communication expertise, including ademonstrated capability to relate sophisticated information and concepts in plainEnglish are a must.

•practice managing an organization's reputation and messaging indigital media, including online news sites, blogs and social media.

•Proven capability to manage numerous issues and projects simultaneouslyin a fast-paced, high-visibility work environment, and a track record ofdelegating effectively to team members.

•Success in a highly collaborative, team-oriented businessenvironment; where results are dependent on the capability to balance a strongbias for action with the need for cross-functional integration.

The Director of Corporate Reputation and Thought leadership abilitieswill be responsible for the following:

•Leading and developing ateam of strategic communication advisors to support key business leaders

• Developing,executing and measuring the effectiveness of a comprehensive reputationmanagement strategy for the company

• Developingand executing executive visibility and positioning strategies to position BlueShield of California leaders as experts and trusted advisers to keystakeholders

• Developingcompelling message platforms and campaigns that position Blue Shield ofCalifornia to help drive health care reform and achieve our mission

• Cultivatingstrong relationships with key influencers and opinion leaders in the healthcareindustry

•Closely monitoring andanticipating stakeholder sentiments, as well as forging authentic bonds locatedon points of mutual interest.

• Maintaininga deep and broad knowledge of current issues in healthcare.
